New Chocolate Frog Card Released for Christmas 2018

Harry Potter Chocolate Frog Card Devlin Whitehorn

Just in time for the Christmas season, a new chocolate frog card has been released. The latest character you can add to your collection is a gamechanger for the wizarding world: Devlin Whitehorn.

With every new card that is released, we get a bigger idea of how many intricate witches and wizards make up the extraordinary wizarding world as we know it. Even though he is not a character in the books or movies, his presence will be familiar to everyone who loves to travel by broom, and of course, from the importance of the Nimbus 2000 in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone and Nimbus 2001 in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. Whitehorn's company created them!

From the back of the card, we gain a bigger insight about his impact:
Devlin Whitehorn created the Nimbus Racing Broom Company. He helped design Nimbus brooms, which revolutionized the game of Quidditch. A master flyer, he is a Quidditch fan who enjoys watching and playing the game when he can.
Instead of a big announcement about the release of a new card, which has happened in the past, this one has been made available rather quietly. Similarly, the past few chocolate frog cards have prominently featured behind-the-scenes characters that are not very familiar in the Harry Potter universe. Previous recent card figures have included Jocunda Sykes (the first witch to fly over the Atlantic), Hengist of Woolcroft (founder of Hogsmeade), and Bertie Blotts (creator of Bertie Blotts Every Flavor Beans). It'll be interesting in the future if chocolate frog cards return to include familiar characters we already know or introduce new faces.

You can try to find Devlin Whitehorn's card from the mystery packs at Universal Studios such as the Wizarding World of Harry Potter in Orlando or purchase it directly from Warner Bros Studio Tour London. Check back for a review and closer look of the card to be added soon!

Are More Harry Potter Spin-Offs On The Way?

It was recently revealed by both Warner Bros and JK Rowling that the famed author will be screenwriting an adaptation to the fictional Harry Potter textbook Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them and its writer Newt Scamander. This new series will lead from New York City during the Jazz Age and supposedly set off in the adventures with Scamander and the mysterious wondrous creatures he finds.

There has been no official word on how many films will be featured in this new spin-off franchise about the wizarding world, however rumors come to light that there may be more films on the way outside of Scamander.

According to BleedingCool.com: Warner Bros has gone on a copyrighting spree for the fellow Harry Potter titles:
  • Tales of Beedle The Bard
  • Quidditch Through the Ages
  • The Quiddidtch teams Wimbourne Wasps, Chudley Cannons, and Kenmare Kestrels.
  • Quiddidtch expert and Quiddidtch Through the Ages author Kennilworthy Whisp
These copyrights have been made in various properties from animated series, live-action or animated films, video games, publication of books, and much more.

No confirmation or verification has been made by Warner Bros or JK Rowling about this surprising new development, but could these copyrights very well lead to more spin-offs either for television or the big screen? Only time will tell!

Potions, Spells or Quidditch, Oh My Pottermore!

So, Pottermore has been open to all for more than a month now. I was so happy when I became a beta tester, and worked with my fellow Potterheads to make the site better. Much has been improved upon, and yet there are a few areas I know I still struggle with...

Today's topic isn't an area of Pottermore I made an attempt for requests of changes, however it is an asset of the site that I've been struggling with since DAY ONE: Spells and Potions.

You know the deal: we can duel using spells against each other, and practice making potions. You know the frustration too. Every time we try to brew a potion, our wands always fire for too long at the cauldron and the whole potion blows up in our faces. 20+ Galleons GONE. When we go to duel in a spell fight, we're not quick enough to make a qualifying spell. The actual lettering on my keyboard, GONE.

I don't know how fellow students do it, but I haven't gained any house points. Only 23 total is what I've gained. I'm pretty sure if you could lose for being behind in house points, I would lose. And, I'm pretty sure the points I do have they were mostly gathered through collecting objects.

Now, where does Quidditch come in? I'm not quite sure because we can't play Quidditch on Pottermore. It really only turned out to be one page in Chapter 11 of Sorcerer's Stone, where we clicked a few times to catch the Golden Snitch. I found this to be disappointing since Quidditch is such a intricate part of the first novel.

Way more than Spells and Potions, (though out of the two, I prefer potions.) I would love to be able to join a game online against Hufflepuff, Slytherin, or Ravenclaw. I can do Virtual Quidditch because I know I quite literally don't have the heart to play the real deal. It is my destiny to be the keeper. OKAY, I want to BE the keeper.

I'm not sure how much data and space a Quidditch game would take up on Pottermore - would it slow down to a hamster running in a wheel - but one can only wonder that this could be the reason why it's not on Pottermore....But, I digress.

If you chose choose the games to play on Pottermore,
which would you prefer?

Which Quidditch Position Would You Play?

Harry Potter Quidditch Positions
I'd always heard about Quidditch and seen it in the movies, but until reading Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone I hadn't really understood the rules and positions. Of course, after reading how Harry outbroomed Draco during flying class and was given instructions by Oliver Wood, my thoughts runneth away about which position I could snag had I been a member of the Gryffindor team. Let the dissection begin!

Beater - There were never really activities in gym class which required me to have considerable upperarm strength - a must for a beater! So I can only guesstimate that a beater should have the physical strength between opening a jar of pickles without help to a good pitcher's arm like in baseball. I definitely have neither so batting away bludgers for an entire match might not be the best place for me. Especially since the decent balance I have is to keep myself upright while walking, I probably couldn't swing and fly at the same time....

Chaser - A position for athletes who are given the responsibility of scoring team points by swinging the Quaffle through the three-hoops of the opposite team. I pretty much excelled at every sport growing up besides basketball. No matter how close I positioned myself to the hoops, I never succeeded in getting one through- and that was with two feet on the ground. Though aiming the Quaffle at three hoops would probably add odds in my favor, I think I'll need something a little more stationery...

Seeker - The main attraction to this position, since I am a fellow Gryffindor, is to follow in Harry's footsteps and seek Golden Snitch. However, the skills of a seeker tend to go on the fast side and there is a major realization that scoring an upset victory would rest on my shoulders. Chasing after a fly ball in baseball was never my forte...However, hitting it on the other hand...

Keeper - is definitely something I can do! To be a keeper is to protect the three goal posts from the opposite team attempting to score. Any game where I could hit a ball was something I excelled at - give me a goal post to protect and I'll succeed. Though the heaviness of the gear does make me worry about how long I could last batting back and forth between the three hoops, I definitely think it's something I would get used to! So, for me, Keeper it is! :D

Which Quidditch position most suits you? Or is your rightful place cheering others on from the stands?
